Memorial Day

It’s Memorial Day weekend in the states. America’s Library website says, “The first national celebration of Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery. The national observance of Memorial Day still takes place there today, with the placing of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the decoration of each grave with a small American flag”.

This is the first year that my dad will have an American flag decorating his grave at the Veteran’s Cemetery he is buried at in Sierra Vista, AZ. His grave didn’t have a headstone on it last Memorial Day. He passed away on May 5th. I don’t live in Arizona so I don’t visit his grave. It’s nice that he is remembered for serving the country this weekend. He was happy he did that.

For centuries now, thousands of people have sacrificed a lot for our freedom in the US. We have a lot of military families living in our neighborhood because we’re not that far from Ft. Hood. I’m grateful to them for what they do. I’m grateful for the people who work hard to provide what I get to enjoy each day in my life. A lot of people I’ve never met have done a great deal to help me.

You may be one of those people who does a lot that helps people. You may not realize how much you do or how important what you’re doing really is. What I’ve noticed about people serving in the military is that they have a very big purpose they are focused on in their lives. Their purpose serves others, people like me. We all need to serve a purpose. We need that to be fulfilled.

This weekend, I’m going to think about my father and the people who have served in the armed forces here in the states. I’m going to say a prayer for their families and wish them well. This weekend is about service. It’s about a love for something bigger than ourselves. It’s about freedom. It’s about our way of life. It’s about being better for someone else because we can.

Until next time…I’m thanking all the military families for their service.

Best,

Laura
