When You Need A Jehoshaphat Prayer

Something I learned a number of years ago that has helped me a lot was how to pray using scripture. And it comes in handy. God keeps His Word and His Word is important. So praying based on stories in the bible is something that I believe is talking to God in God’s language. After all, He put those stories in the bible to teach us some things.

My favorite story is 2 Chronicles 20. In the story, King Jehoshaphat was informed that 3 armies were coming up against him in battle. In Verse 3 it says, 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So when something is really serious, I set myself to talk to the Lord and fast for a period of time during the day.

After this everyone came to gather from Judah to ask the Lord for help. And Jehoshaphat stood among the people. It’s powerful to have people join with you to ask God for help. You don’t have to do things alone.
6 And [Jehoshaphat] said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?

This reminds me to acknowledge God for being who God is. After all, He did create everything, sustains everything, and designed my life for me, so He pretty much deserves my respect, awe, and reverence. Jehoshaphat then reminds God of what He did for the people of Israel by giving them this land these armies were coming to take.

These were the very same people that God said the Israelites should not come up against when they were taking over their promised land with God leading the charge. And He tells God to look at what these people are doing now. And my very favorite line is this….
12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.

When I am up against something I have no power to conquer, this line says it all. I don’t know what to do but my eyes are on You, God. You see, I am not here to judge. God is the judge. When I’m having a problem with someone or something going on, I tell God where I’m at with it. And I tell God that I need Him to resolve it for me.

And this is the love that God shows to people who look to Him and trust him. God moved a son of a son of a great priest, a Levite, and said this through him….

15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.

God said the battle was His not theirs so they didn’t need to be afraid. He goes on to say that they did not need to fight in this battle. They just needed to set themselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord with them. I don’t know about you, but when I give my battles to God in prayer, He takes care of them.

And as soon as God told them, Jehoshaphat bowed his head and he and all the people fell down and began worshiping the Lord. And they praised God. Then in the morning… .20 …Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

All over the bible, we are told to believe in the Lord, believe and you will prosper. Jesus told people their faith had made them whole when He healed them.
22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

Literally, every person in those armies were dead when the people of Judah got there. It took the people of Judah 3 days to carry away the spoil from the battle God won. I wanted to share this with you because a lot of people have some pretty heavy stuff going on now. This story helps me with the big stuff.

I was praying based on this story this morning and right after I said my prayer, God changed the situation and I’m enjoying some much needed peace right now. And I’m going to keep praying to God with this story until the whole matter is resolved. God led me into where I am now and I’m so happy and grateful He did. He blesses me so much.

Until next time…If you have a Jehoshaphat kind of problem, take it to God in prayer like Jehoshaphat did and then watch what God does. You’ll be glad you did.

Best,

Laura
